“Serious evidence of rape on Yezidi women are emerging against the Peshmrgas”
In the aftermath of ISIS invasion of Shingal, Peshmerga fighters under the leadership of President Barzani of Kurdistan Autonomous region in Iraq killed thousands of Yezidis in Shingal. 7000 Yezidi women were kidnapped and the entire population were rendered homeless, living their lives in camps under sub-human conditions. ISIS did not act alone. In fact the series of incidents that took place before the ISIS invasion clearly shows how complicit Peshmergas were with ISIS.
The circumstances in which this genocide took place and women were taken away as war booty by ISIS is heart wrenching. On August 02, 2014, on the eve of ISIS’ attack on the Yezidis in Shingal region, more than 10,000 Peshmergas were present in the Shingal region, allegedly there to protect the Yezidis. In the early hours of the evening, the Yezidis tried desperately to flee for their lives to Mount Shingal, an ancient revered holy place for the Yezidis in Iraq’s Nineveh province to seek shelter, but the Peshmergas would not allow it. At about 10 pm, these same Peshmergas who had promised to defend the Yezidis, began to withdraw from Yezidis’ villages of the Southern side of Mount Sinjar without notifying the Yezidis and they escaped back to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) region. Yezidis begged the local forces for weapons and ammunitions so that they could defend themselves from ISIS. But the Peshmergas refused. They would not spare even one weapon, not one round of ammunition to the Yezidi men, women, and children whom they had trapped in what was a waiting room for death and carnage at the hands of ISIS. And several Yezidis who begged and pleaded for weapons to save themselves and their people were killed mercilessly by the Peshmergas. And so, on August 03, 2014 at 2:00 am, ISIS entered Sinjar region. The stage was set for a massacre of Yezidis, totally unarmed and harmless. Yezidi women, children, the elderly and empty-handed adults, with no means of self-defence at all — tried to escape the barbarians and flee to Mount Shingal. It did not take long – only four or five hours it took – for the Yezidis to run out of options for escape and the region was overrun with death and massacre, and ISIS took over Shingal region. With no means of defense, of course the carnage was immense: Thousands of men were killed on the spot, including the beheading of hundreds. The UN estimates that 5000 Yezidis were murdered and thousands of women and children taken hostage. The actual numbers are much much higher as mass graves are being discovered every other day. Thus began the extreme ordeal for 7000+ Yezidi women in the custody of ISIS, being raped and tortured on a daily basis, being treated as sex slaves. Even children are not being spared from rape. Some of those women and girls have had to watch 7, 8 and 9 year old children bleed to death before their eyes, after being raped by ISIS militia multiple times a day. Some of these girls in ISIS custody committed suicide by slashing their writs. Some met with explosion and death while trying to escape. Some begged the coalition forces to come and bomb their cells as they believed that their lives have become a living hell.
